Why Is Pediatric Dentistry Important?
It is a common misconception that children are unlikely to develop dental decay. In fact, kids are sometimes more likely to suffer from cavities than adults. Often, they eat more sugar and they do not understand the full importance of daily dental care. If chronic decay develops, it is likely to affect children into adolescence and adulthood. This is one reason why regular dental treatment is so important for kids. Because of the great importance of pediatric dentistry, we encourage you to bring your child in at least twice a year. If he or she has chronic decay or significant misalignment, you may need to schedule more frequent appointments.
Cleanings and Exams
Preventive dentistry is the backbone of our pediatric services. At each biannual visit, our hygienist will clean plaque and tartar from your child’s teeth. We know that dental cleanings can sometimes make young kids anxious. Our hygienist uses gentle techniques that will not cause any discomfort. Meanwhile, we will talk to your child throughout the cleaning, explaining everything and helping him or her to feel at ease.

After the cleaning, Dr. Polidori will carry out an exam. He will check for damaged teeth, signs of decay, and gum inflammation. In addition, he can look for dental problems that are unique to kids. These concerns include over-retained baby teeth, misalignment as permanent teeth start to come in, and the effect of thumb sucking on developing teeth. By monitoring your child’s dental development, Dr. Polidori can provide appropriate care before he or she experiences serious oral health problems.
Preventive Treatments Especially for Kids
Exams and cleanings are important for all ages. However, we also offer treatments that are primarily intended for kids. Fluoride supplements strengthen the enamel on your child’s developing teeth, preventing cavities. Fluoride is a mineral found naturally in many food sources. It is also added to most public water supplies. We can provide the extra fluoridation necessary to safeguard your child's teeth though varnishes, rinses, and gels.
Sealants are another important preventive treatment. Dr. Polidori will apply a liquid plastic to the tops of your child’s permanent molars. After the material hardens, it will form a virtually impermeable barrier. In this way, sealants will keep food and bacteria from collecting in the deep grooves, and they will greatly reduce the risk of decay for many years ahead.
